It would seem that it is a year of milestones and celebrations. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Manchester are celebrating their 110th Anniversary, elsewhere you may have read that Collyhurst & Moston are now well into their centenary year celebrations, but another significant milestone is that of St John’s ABC in Chorlton who have recently held a fun day to mark their 10th Anniversary.

Thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s, Celebration Funding programme, St John’s were able to host an array of fun activities and provide the local community the opportunity to find out what the club is all about. Space was given over to other local community groups as well, so that they could promote their work

The funding meant that the club could hire bouncy castles, and other inflatable activities, the Fire Service brought an engine along, and there was a climbing wall as well. Inside the Parish Centre, there was face painting, music and lots of food available, along with the usual tombola and cake sales.

The gym itself was also a hive of activity. Club members displayed their boxing skills to the public and an array of awards, belts and trophies were on display to show what the club and it’s members had achieved over the ten-years. Professional boxer Lee ‘Sharpy’ Oldham also came to the club and took part in a public sparring and training session. He then gave St John’s members to step into the ring and spar with him.

It was a great day for members and the local community.

Well done to all at the club, for achieving this great milestone and for all the work you have put in over the last decade – long may it continue.
