STOCKPORT LADS AT ORMSIDE MILL

Thanks to funding from Manchester Guardian Charitable Trust, Stockport Lads Club have been able to take a group of their young people for a memorable weekend of outdoor fun and activities at the Boys & Girls Clubs own residential centre, Ormside Mill.

Twelve young people and four volunteers headed to Cumbria on the evening of Friday 15th June.

After a noisy Friday night, there were a lot of sleepy looking faces around the early breakfast table.

But early it was, as there was going to be a full day of activities to enjoy. And, after a hearty breakfast, the group gathered themselves and headed out into the wonderful countryside and outdoor environment that Cumbria is renowned for.

The lads were quickly kitted out in waterproofs and helmets, before driving out towards Ullswater for the first of the activities – a Ghyll Scramble. For the uninitiated, that is essentially climbing up or sliding down a waterfall. Either way, the result is the group getting very wet, but having immense fun in a wonderful environment, unlike anything they will find back home in Stockport.

Once back from this adventure, there was time to grab some sandwiches before getting ready to have-a-go at the centres own small high ropes course and the (in)famous – LEAP OF FAITH!! This takes a great deal strength and courage. If a young person has the guts and determination to do this, they have the resilience to do almost anything – it is a great learning opportunity for any young person.

Saturday night seems to be a lot quieter than the Friday – one wonders why?

Sunday is a little more leisurely – although still quite an early start for many of these young lads. Today is spent doing team game and problem-solving activities around the grounds that Ormside Mill has available.

Before long though, it’s time to grab some lunch, get tidied up and then back on the minibus to head home.

The weekend seems to have flown by, but the memories will undoubtedly live long in the memories of this group of young people.
