WHITEMOSS EDGE CLOSE 5-a-side TOURNAMENT

Despite some last-minute concerns over the venue, the 5-a-side tournaments are able to go ahead, and they started on Saturday 23rd March with the U12’s age group.

It turned out to be one the closest tournaments for many a year, with the winner and runner-up separated by only one goal – first to third place was decided on goal difference!!

Droylsden Juniors got off to a very strong start with a convincing win against Whitemoss CYP, and it looked as though Droylsden would be the team to beat.

But Whitemoss gained confidence with, what might have been a surprise win against West End Boys & Girls Club. Buoyed by this result, Whitemoss followed on with a convincing win against Active Communities Network, this despite going 1-0 down in the first couple of minutes

This all set up a crucial last game between West End & Droylsden. West End could really upset the apple cart or Droylsden could secure top spot.

As you might expect with a local rivalry, the apple cart was well and truly thrown over as West End came out close winners.

This meant that there was the possibility for anyone of three teams who could be announced winners – Droylsden, West End or Whitemoss. Droylsden & Whitemoss both had the same goal difference of +9, so it went to goals for and Whitemoss had managed to score one more goal than Droylsden, meaning that they were announced the winners.

It was a really good tournament and all the players took part in a great spirit, shaking hands after every match.

It was great to see Active Communities taking part in their first Boys & Girls Clubs event. Well done to everyone and thank you to all the volunteers, leaders and parents for bringing their young people along to take part.

Both Whitemoss & Droylsden will now go on to represent Greater Manchester in the National Association of Boys & Girls Clubs tournament which takes place in Manchester in June.

We also have our U14 and U16 tournaments taking place on 11th May. If you would like to enter a team or two, please click here to find out how you can do so.
