WYTHENSHAWE IS CHAMPION
The weekend of 29th November was a good one for Greater Manchester, and in particular Wythenshawe – specifically for Boxing clubs in Wythenshawe.
On Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December, the National Association of Boys & Girls Clubs National Boxing Finals came to a conclusion, with their finals taking place in Bridlington and then in Greater Manchester on the Sunday.
And two boxers from Greater Manchester had national champions – both hailing from Wythenshawe.
Kieran McDaid of Jimmy Egan’s Boxing Academy travelled to Bridlington on Saturday 30th November for his final’s bout against Charlie Martin from Team Wiseman ABC who had made the journey from Portsmouth on the south coast. McDaid knew it was going to be a tough bout and both boxers did their clubs, their counties and themselves proud. But the judges awarded the decision to McDaid.
The following day, Clarke Smith had home advantage as the West Wythenshawe ABC boxer faced Liam Orme from Weston Warriors ABC who are based in Weston-Super-Mare. The south west supporters that had travelled with Orme, did him proud, cheering him on as best they could. But Smith boxed well and took great encouragement from the fact that he was boxing on home ground. He was determined to take the prestigious national title and make it the second .
Wythenshawe win of the weekend. The bout concluded with Clarke securing victory on a split decision. It had been a close bout, but Smith is now an NABGC Class C National Champion.
The NABGC National Championships have drawn to a conclusion for another year. It started in October with around 1,800 boxers starting the journey and the finals in Bridlington and Manchester were the target for all those boxers. Only a relative few managed to make it through and all should feel very proud of themselves
Everyone at Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Manchester offer our heartiest congratulations to Kieran and Clarke on their national titles. They are just reward for the hard work that they and their coaches have out in, not just in recent months, but for a number of years – WELL DONE!! We look forward to many more future successes for you, your clubs, Wythenshawe and Greater Manchester.
We would also like to this opportunity to say a BIG thank you Maverick Stars who have provided a package of prizes, personal development and support to a number of boxers who made it through to the Class A, B and C NABGC finals.
