COLLYHURST & MOSTON BOOK LAUNCH

One of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Manchester’s original clubs has been celebrating a century of service to the young people of their community.

Collyhurst and Moston Lads Club Amateur Boxing Club, are 100-years old.

On Saturday 9th June, the Boxing community from Manchester and beyond showed up at the club to help celebrate the milestone at the clubs centenary book launch.

Collyhurst & Moston Boxing Club: 100 Years: The Official History of Manchester’s Premier Boxing Gym, was launched at the gym amid scenes of great publicity.

The book, written by John Ludden, and with a foreword by Frank Warren, charts the history of the club, from it’s beginnings, when it was founded by Harry Flemming amid the Great War, right through to the current day, where it is led by Tommy McDonagh. Along the way, you meet some of the fighters that have come through the gym such as Pat Barrett, Michael Gomez, Robbie Reid and many others. You are also introduced to some of the boxers currently based at the gym and working their way through the professional ranks, such as Zelfa Barrett and Lyndon Arthur

All these people were at the book launch and gave their endorsement to the book and the gym.

Club leader, Tommy McDonagh, said, “It’s been a great day and an amazing turnout. John has done a fantastic job with the book and I hope that people get out there and buy a copy. All the profits will be going towards the work that the club does with young people from Collyhurst and Moston.”

Andy Hamill, County Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater, said, “This is a great book. It’s not just about the amazing list of boxers that have gone through the Collyhurst gym, it is also about Manchester’s social history. The work that this club has done, and continues to do, to help make Manchester a better place, is documented in this book. The list of British, and World Champions is the icing on the cake.”
