BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF GREATER MANCHESTER 2018 RECORD HAUL OF NATIONAL BOXING CHAMPIONS IN NABGC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Boxers from clubs affiliated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Manchester have enjoyed a record year in the NABGC National Boxing Championships.
Clubs from the county had SEVEN finalists across the four age groups, from that there were five national champions.
The NABGC Championships started back in October when around 1,000 young boxers across the UK entered their local rounds. Over the two months competitors gradually work their way through numerous rounds all hoping to make it to the final.
This year the finals were held over the weekend of Thursday 29th November to Saturday 1st December.
Class A, B & C finals were held in Bridlington on Friday 30th November and Saturday 1st December, but the Class D final was held on home turf here in Manchester at the Gorton Monastery on Thursday 29th November.
One boxer was boxing at his home arena on the Thursday. C. Burton from Middleton Select ABC took the first title for Greater Manchester’s Boxers at the Monastery after a wonderful display against L.Southgate from St Mary’s ABC in Kent.
The following two days saw a further four boxers from Greater Manchester clubs take national titles and secure their place in NABGC history alongside the likes of Amir Khan, Tyson and Hughie Fury, Prince Naseem and Ricky Hatton amongst many more.
The Roll of Honour reads like this
52KG - K.Hardiker (Moss Side Fire ABC) - Finalist
70KG - C.Collins (Northside ABC) – Champion
80KG – J. Edge(Jimmy Egan’s Boxing Academy) – Champion
51KG – C.McCarthy (Jimmy Egan’s Boxing Academy) – Champion
60KG – D.Preston (Salford City Boxing ABC) – Champion
86KG – S.Khaliq (Moss Side Fire ABC) – Finalist
56KG – C.Burton (Middleton Select ABC) - Champion
Well done to all those boxers who took part this year, but special congratulations to those listed above who have gone on to become an NABGC National Boxing Champion. Well done also to all the coaches and volunteers who have contributed to such a great achievement.
Thanks also to those who helped out on the evening. Mark and Walleed from South Yorkshire Boys & Girls Clubs, all the officials and also to our friends from Bury Photographic Society who were our official photographers for the evening. Also to Tommy McDonagh and Matty Hall who were our commentators on our live broadcast provided by Film My Match.
SUMMER ACTIVITIES AT ORMSIDE
As I am sure we are all aware, it has been a long hot summer.
Nobody has needed to go abroad to get some sun – you might even say that the UK has been an ideal place to enjoy the sun. Maybe get out and enjoy the countryside.
That’s just what three groups of young people were able to do during the first two-weeks of the school summer 2018 holidays, thanks to support from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Manchester.
Groups from Jimmy Egan’s Boxing Academy, St John’s ABC and Trinity House Community Centre, were able to visit Ormside Mill and enjoy a range of outdoor activities and the wonderful Cumbrian countryside in all it’s sunny splendour.
There were a range of activities that the youngsters were able to enjoy, including, Canoeing at Ullswater, Ghyll Scrambling, Moutain Biking, walking and then in the grounds tree climbing, leap of faith and a range of other team building and confidence building activities. Some of the Boxing clubs even brought pads and gloves with them and ran a training session in the barn.
The activities were constant and ensured that the participants slept well at night.
It is something that Boys & Girls Clubs plan to run again next summer, so please let us know if you would like us to include you in our plans. Even if you feel you might have enough young people interested in going, please us know and we can link you up with another club.
Also, look out for a “How to Run a Residential” training event coming up in the new year!!
